General Information and Habitat

Bats are one of the most elusive pest species in Texas, and one of the most prevalent, as Texas is home to over 30 of the 47 bat species in the country. They frequently live undetected by the average person. One of the most common ways bats find themselves in a home or commercial space is by invading attics, crawlspaces, and rafters. They are known carriers of rabies – up to 10% of the bats, such as the Big Brown Bat and Mexican Free-tailed Bat, found by children or pets have tested positive for the disease. Because their bite is so swift, a person may be completely unaware that they’ve been bitten or exposed to the virus. If left unchecked for too long in an enclosed space, the buildup of their waste can expose you to the lung disease, histoplasmosis.
