Coyotes are one of the most notorious nuisance species in Texas. They are only about as tall as a German Shepherd, and although their fluffy coat makes them look quite hefty, they don’t typically exceed 50lbs. The coyote is one of the most intuitive and adaptive species known to man, being able to take residence in woodlands, deserts, grasslands, and now, urban areas. They eat almost anything, from insects and fruit to dead animals. Coyotes are mostly nocturnal and blend into their natural environment, so the results of their visit may be the only evidence you see. Once they find reliable resources, they will keep coming back. Something as small as fallen birdseed is enough to keep them interested. Although bites are uncommon, keep in mind that coyotes are predators. They are carriers of rabies and pose a health risk to domestic dogs as well since they carry dog heartworm and canine distemper. They have also known to prey on small dogs and cats.
